Center of the Universe

This marks the very center of Washington D.C.

What a day...

While everyone was in New York I decided to visit the Holocaust Museum. It was overwhelming and intense, but it had the best layout I've ever seen in a museum. My favorite section was the room full of pictures.

Fantastic Idea

I played tour guide yesterday and was delighted to see some stores for the first time (how many times have I been down to Georgetown? ....many). Dean and Deluca: wonderful!

Snow Day {take 1}

In light of it being a snow day: Five Guys.

Ambassador

Last Friday during class we were fortunate to have the opportunity to hear from the Ambassador of Jamaica, Anthony Johnson. He said something so wonderful and I vow to never forget these words; "Man, woman, and children: one unit." Johnson claimed that in Jamaica the thing that is lacking is the number of strong families in the community. He and his wife of 40 years have 4 children.

So, on facebook they were doing this thing: post a picture of your famous counterpart. I rarely participate in facebook, but I thought I would put something up (for the people's sake...yeah, them). The following picture features Diane Keaton from Annie Hall (stole my heart). I don't think I look like her at all, but I've been told more than once that I resemble her (and her idiosyncrasies).

Simply quaint.

Supreme?

Recently, as America now knows, the Supreme Court has ruled that campaign finance has no limits and corporations have the right to freedom of speech(?)...that's right, corporations are now people too, (contrary to anything intuitive). Last Friday our class discussed campaign finance, and although it is easy to put down the Supreme Court ruling, it is beyond difficult to figure out where to go from here. Personally, I do not agree that corporations are people, (people are people), and should not be able to use the first amendment to defend the use of funds to support a candidate. Individuals should be the ones to give of their own money. I collected some responses to a NY Times article about the ruling:

Dave : Tucson
"Maybe the candidates should wear jumpsuits, like the NASCAR drivers, with the logos of all their corporate sponsons emblazoned on them. That way we can vote for the candidate that is sponsored by our favorite corporations"
Andrew: Texas

"Corporations do not equal people and are not covered by free speech. I suppose it's time to amend the Gettysburg Address to "that government of the corporations, by the corporations, for the corporations, shall not perish from the earth."

Agreed.

To the Valley

[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2010/7/20/2919956//01 Wordless Chorus.mp3]

Valley Forge was interesting; creepy dormitories, cafeteria food, forest fun, and lots of snow were the things I remember most...oh, and the nine hour bus drive back to the District.

Teen Angst

J.D. Salinger died. I've been claiming this book as my favorite ever since I read it in high school. My favorite part was that I felt Holden and I thought the same: thoughts running on links to another idea. I mean, it could have done without the swearing, but for the most part it was wonderful and not "phony."

Portrait Gallery: Round II

A Dream

I almost couldn't believe the Lincoln Memorial actually existed until I stepped inside the walls of this  monument. And to think, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his speech just a few feet away from where I'm standing...truly remarkable.

Good Eats

There is so much food in D.C.! Word of advice: Kramers for late night sweet cravings, Farmers and Fishers for locally grown goodness, Ceiba for the best virgin mojito, and Eastern Market for the best pancakes of your life.
